Lower Shawsheen Playground
Warner Larson was hired by the Town of Andover to renovate this small and non-accessible playground. The goal of the design was to create a ground-based playground that is visually open and challenging for a range of age groups. The budget constraint for this renovation presented a challenge in maximizing community usage while minimizing cost. Our team developed a series of design options to be presented to community members and obtain feedback about which design and elements were preferred.
Given its close proximity to the Shawsheen River, the design was inspired by the flowing nature of this natural landmark. Mimicking a stream of water, the safety surfacing varies in shades of blue and grey, and creates an asymmetric path across the playground. The natural boulders scattered throughout and fish-shaped safety surfacing, further allude to the design theme. The picnic area nestled amidst existing and new shade trees is strategically placed on-center of the playground to work as a river overlook for the Lower Shawsheen Playground.
