From a challenging non-accessible asphalt schoolyard with steep grade change to lower Mystic neighborhood, the new design has transformed this into an inviting, playful, and ecological open space with seamless universal access to folks of all abilities. On a tight site with varied program needs, the design effectively weaves in both active, passive spaces creating an urban park-like setting under diverse tree canopy. The eye-catching ground pattern with its pleasing nature colors helps define circulation spaces while creating a harmonious composition. Since its opening, this schoolyard has become an asset for the City of Somerville and embraced by the diverse community for its multi-generational use.
