Peggy Hannon Rizza Park Complex

The Town of Billerica selected Warner Larson for renovation of their sports complex athletic fields from a competitive selection process in March 2021

From a sports focus, our team transformed the vision of this complex into a multi-generational park for all ages and making it a four-season destination.

Through a series of meetings with the stakeholder’s sports league and community, Warner Larson recommended 2 synthetic turf fields and 2 softball women’s/men’s league size fields. We replaced one undersized softball field with a flexible lawn space for hosting community events such as movie nights, bands/concerts along with offering open play for impromptu games like frisbee, badminton and more.

The configuration of the concession/restroom building allows for generous passive spaces with one under a pavilion shelter. The picnic area opens to a game plaza that will have a bocce court, ping pong tables, and corn hole games to provide diverse use.

Besides the sports lighting, the concession area will have catenary lighting to allow extended use of the park into dusk.

Surrounded by a sensitive pond ecosystem, we along with Nitsch Engineering successfully got all the regulatory permits by demonstrating green principles throughout the design including organic infill. The existing trail through the woods and ponds will be improved and supplemented with bio-diverse native planting with interpretive signage.
