Warner Larson was hired by the Town of Needham to integrate a U10 synthetic turf field and nature trail for the exterior development of the Sunita Williams Elementary School. The abundant natural ecosystems surrounding the site became a focal element in the reimagining of the outdoor space. Thus, the design aims to create an immersive user experience with nature through accessible nature trails and boardwalks, open to both the school and the community. Custom wayfinding signs were placed throughout the trails and overlooks to learn about the importance of the native flora and fauna found in the pond, woods, and wetland ecosystems. The grass field was converted to a U-10 synthetic turf soccer field to maximize the play usage and address drainage issues.
